Travel Destination in the Bavarian Alps
The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine – located between Munich and Salzburg – offers guided tours through a salt mine that has been active for over 500 years.
Salt has been extracted from the mountain with the help of Alpine water for more than 500 years. The result is a mixture of water and salt, known as brine, which is later vaporised in the Bad Reichenhall Salt Works and processed into pure Alpine salt.
During the guided tour, multimedia presentations and a display of tools and machinery tell the history of the mine and the evolving work of the miners.
Highlights of the 1.5 hour tour include a ride on the mine railway, two wooden slides and a boat ride on the underground mirror lake. A visit to the salt mine is an unforgettable experience for families, school classes and adult groups alike.
Total length underground railway ride: 1.500 yards
Slide length: 130 feet
Dimensions underground lake: 400 feet long, 130 feet wide
Exclusive underground dinners can be booked in a special room in the mine, the Kaiser-Franz-Sinkwork.
From Salzburg it is within distance of a 30 minutes ride. The region of Berchtesgaden is famous for the German Alpine Road (Deutsche Alpenstraße), the Eagle´s Nest and was the filming location for the popular movie “The Sound of Music”, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2025.
The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine is open all year round, hosting 360,000 visitors every year. The tour guide speaks German, and free audio guides are available in 17 different languages. The visit is suitable for all weathers and a constant temperature of 50°F offers welcome refreshment even in the summer.
The on-site Bergschänke restaurant offers a traditional Bavarian cuisine and special group menus which can be enjoyed in summer on the wonderful terrace, overlooking the Berchtesgaden Alps.
Combined tickets including the Eagle's Nest, a boat ride across Lake Königssee, the Berchtesgaden Christmas Market, and the Old Salt Works in Bad Reichenhall are available for groups of 20 people and more. All tickets can be bought online.
